Books I Like

Blogged under General Blather by Mary on Sunday 9 October 2005 at 10:05 am

I like to read. Sometimes I don’t have the chance to read as much as I’d like, but I very much enjoy it when I do. Here are a few books that I’ve read and what I think of them.

The Ferret : An Owner’s Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Happy Healthy Pet)
If I wrote it, I ought to promote it. This is the first book I wrote. It’s going on 10 years old, but most of the information holds up, particularly the training tips.
500 Things My Ferret Told Me
Another one of mine. This is a humor book, and, though it’s aimed at ferret owners, even non-ferret owners have gotten a few giggles from it.
The Wit and Wisdom of the Modern Ferrets : A Ferret’s Perspective On Ferret Care
This book is a little twist on ferret care information: it’s written by ferrets. While we were publishing Modern Ferret magazine, one of the things we did to try to keep the information fresh was have some of our ferrets write columns. This is a collection of a bunch of those columns. It’s a fun read for someone thinking about getting a ferret or someone who just wants to do a little refresher reading.
Carp Fishing on Valium
Graham Parker is one of my favorite singer/songwriters — and he happens to be a wonderful short-story writer, as well. I highly recommend this one. Very funny. Well done.
The Other Life of Brian
Another one by Graham Parker. This one a novel. More funny, sarcastic, well-written stuff. Try it.
Diary of a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star: Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople
Another favorite songwriter. This is the definitive book on touring with a rock group. Not at all what you’d expect. Ian Hunter’s humanity shows through in this book. It’s well worth the read. Since I’m plugging Mr. Hunter, I’ll add that you really ought to catch him the next time he tours anywhere near you. His next tour will probably be in 2007.
